 The world’s transition to green energy is likely to push prices higher over the medium term, potentially fueling inflation, ECB President Christine Lagarde said today. „In the medium term, cost pressures related to the green transition will certainly be stronger,“ she told a BIS conference. „It will be related to the decarbonization and the transition.“ She said the world needs more ambitious transition goals, which will put upward pressure on carbon prices while the demand for the necessary metals and minerals will also raise their cost. Bloomberg reported that Lagarde said she’s open to the idea of using the institution’s lending facilities to encourage the transition to carbon neutrality. “I know it’s not squarely in the mandate and it is not necessarily in what we consider as the prime objective but you know, if we don’t try, then we have no chance of succeeding,” Lagarde said. “So count on me.”
